Why I Teach Children Piano
I've been teaching piano since I was 14 years old. It's one of the most gratifying jobs I can imagine doing.
I think that teaching children piano is one of the most fun activities to fill your life with as well as an incredibly rewarding job.
I love that I have to think and teach differently from one student to the next. I constantly have to reevaluate my teaching strategies and think of new ways to explain different things.
While it can be frustrating sometimes, I often realize that my frustration comes from me not being able to explain something as well as I'd like. It is often fixed with a good brainstorming session.
I love getting to see children get excited about such an amazing instrument like the piano. It's also really fun to get to hang out with younger kids since they make you feel excited about things that you forgotten about!
How I Started to Teach Children Piano
My mother's been teaching piano for over 25 years now. I started to learn how to teach children piano from her when I was 13 years old.
I first started going to observe her teach lessons (not hard, since it was at our house). Then she got the idea to actually teach a class of a couple of her older students and me piano pedagogy so I went through almost a year of that.
I also read several books about piano pedagogy and watched some videos of prestigious piano pedagogues who had developed important concepts in the last several decades/years.
Child Piano Prodigies
Child prodigies are rare and they're usually a product of some very good teaching and some very dedicated parents, but it's always fun to find awesome videos of incredibly talented little pianists.
Books that I've read to Learn to Teach Children Piano
These are just some of the books that I've read that have broadened my horizons when it comes learning how to teach children piano.
There are so many out there so I would recommend starting with the Well-Tempered Keyboard Teacher to find out what's out there and then to hone in on what you would like to do.
There are many styles to learn about so make sure you read many different things so you don't get stuck in a rut. There are many ways to teach children piano!

My First Experience in Teaching Children Piano
My first teaching experience from starting a little piano camp for 4-6 year olds. I did a week camp for those very new beginners.
Here's what I focused on:
1) how to sit at the piano
2) the correct hand position
3) quarter, half, whole notes and rests
4) high and low notes
5) topography of the piano
6) how to count beats
7) what is the beat of a song
We learned a lot of songs that they sung and danced to. They learned by feeling the music and by moving to it.
When you teach children piano, it is important to keep their ages and attentions spans in mind. With young children, it is best to move around. Keeping them moving and interested allows them to process information better and retain it longer.
Why To Teach Children Piano
1) It's fun.
2) It's rewarding when they love it.
3) There's always something new to learn for YOU.
4) Each child is different and it's exciting.
5) It's a good way to make money.
What My Studio is Like Now
I now have my own studio...it's taken me several years work up to it. It's taken time to build up a reputation in my area and for me to start getting students by word of mouth.
I have 10 students, most of whom comes for a half an hour lesson a week.
I also have a theory class for half an hour a week so that I can teach all of my students theory at one time without having to spend lesson time on it. Also, who wants to repeat the same information 10 times?
This may not be possible if you have children of very different ages but I got lucky and all of mine fall into pretty much the same age group.
How to Teach Children Piano...and Classical Music
This is my favorite set of anthology books for teaching children classical music. I think that they've picked a good selection of pieces.
There are popular classical pieces that are immediately recognized by children which makes them really excited. Unfortunately, those aren't always the greatest piano pieces.
These books also contains less well known piano music (to children) but are pieces that they really should play.
What I love most about these books is that they come in different genres and they are great for teaching children about the different time periods. It's also great for introducing different composers from those time periods.
